Effect Studio

Effect Studio is the creative discovery surface for object-local effects. It previews a candidate against the accepted document state, then commits the named recipe through the normal document transaction and history systems.

Browse, adjust, preview

  1. Select one compatible object, or select several objects when you want to apply the same treatment to all of them.
  2. Open Effect Studio, search the Treatment Gallery, and choose Adjust to expose the recipe controls.
  3. Choose Preview. The comparison renders the accepted state as Before and the current candidate as After.
  4. Use the split slider or Before, After, and Compare modes. Fit, 100%, and 200% change only the preview viewport; drag a zoomed image to inspect its edges and choose Center to restore the origin.

On tablet and narrow screens, use the sticky Preview,Treatments, and Stack & settings buttons to jump through the single scrollable dialog. When a treatment is open for tuning, the last button focuses its controls directly.

With a multi-selection, the comparison shows the first selected object as a representative preview. Applying still affects every selected object; direct tuning is available after selecting one object.

Favorites, Looks, and advanced effects

Favorites are treatments you save on this device for quicker discovery.Document Looks are ordered recipes saved with the current document, so they travel with that design. Advanced individual effects are raw creative building blocks for a specific operator; use Object Filters to change their order, parameters, masks, and blending. Favorites and Looks are grouped with the treatment browser; applied recipe tuning and reordering stay in the applied-stack inspector.

Fit and inspection scale

Fit contains the complete encoded editing preview in the stage. 100%is a true 1:1 view of that preview bitmap—one CSS pixel per encoded preview pixel—and200% doubles that scale. These controls never reposition the document or change the main canvas camera. At 100% and 200%, drag the preview to pan both comparison sides together, or choose Center to return to the middle.

The Effect Studio bitmap is a bounded editing preview, not a full-resolution export. Use the canvas or an exported proof when every source pixel matters. Shared image paints and shapeless image geometry are resolved before the preview frame is fitted, so a current wide image is not cropped to an older node size.

Once the live Before and After previews have settled, choose Check at 2xfor a higher-resolution render against a 1536 × 1152 profile per state. Small selections scale up to use that profile; the resulting bitmap can be smaller to preserve its aspect ratio. It uses the same canonical renderer and matching selection bounds. The check is optional and never delays Apply. If you change the target or treatment settings, its previous result becomes stale and any in-flight render is canceled; run the check again when the live preview has settled. Provisional or failed checks stay labeled and leave the live preview available.

Accepted state versus current candidate

Before is the accepted document captured when the draft or applied-treatment edit began. After is the current candidate, including only the preview-owned or live-edited changes. The comparison never disables the whole Object Filter stack to manufacture an original image, because that would also hide unrelated accepted effects.

Draft preview
Preview changes are provisional until Keep treatment or Add to stack is chosen.
Live tuning
Editing an applied recipe updates that recipe in place while the accepted baseline remains available for comparison.
Cancel
Removes only filters owned by the active preview session and keeps unrelated edits made during the session.
Apply
Creates one normal undoable document edit. Reapplying an existing treatment requires the explicit Add another action.

The Applied effect stack keeps named treatments in execution order. Tune edits one treatment while its neighbors stay in the stack; Move up/Move down moves the whole recipe, and Remove deletes only that treatment. Open Advanced filter order when you need to work on an individual derived effect.

Read the preview status

A preview image carries its source, variant, revision identity, renderer, quality tier, warnings, and fallback state. A provisional result means a bounded render completed while a font or raster resource was still settling; the UI discloses that state and retries the latest matching request. Empty, canceled, missing, and failed results remain distinct from a successful authoritative frame.

A completed 2× check is still an editing proof, not the full-resolution appearance authority. The canvas and export use the document's full-resolution rendering path.

Where advanced editing lives

Effect Studio owns named treatment intent. Open Design/Properties → Object Filterswhen you need per-effect visibility, order, opacity, blend mode, or a raw parameter. Editing a derived member preserves the named treatment and marks it Customized. UseImage Treatments for photo-local correction and Adjustment Layers for effects that intentionally cross object boundaries.

Export and persistence

Applying a treatment stores its editable Object Filter recipe and provenance, not a preview bitmap. The canvas and export compositor consume the document stack. If an export target cannot represent a local effect, follow the export report and verify the smallest affected region rather than assuming the document was flattened.
