Image Conversion
File > Quick Convert turns a bounded batch of local raster files into PNG, JPEG, WebP, or AVIF. Conversion runs in the active browser or desktop webview; files are not uploaded.
Quick Convert workflow
- Open File > Quick Convert… and choose one or more local raster files.
- Review content-detected source formats, dimensions, color/alpha facts, and warnings.
- Choose an output format and quality. JPEG exposes an explicit background color for alpha flattening.
- Expand Advanced output controls when you need output dimensions, aspect-ratio locking, or nearest-neighbor resampling.
- Convert and save. Files are decoded and encoded one at a time, with each result shown in the queue.
The queue accepts up to 25 files and 512 MiB of encoded input. Each file is checked before decode for encoded size, dimensions, and decoded pixel budget. A corrupt or unsupported file does not silently become a different format.
Supported conversion boundary
| Source | Output | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF | Alpha may be present; JPEG requires the chosen matte. |
| JPEG/JPG | PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF | Opaque source; lossy output uses the selected quality. |
| WebP | PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF | Animated input is exported as the first decoded frame. |
| AVIF | PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF | Both decode and encode depend on the active runtime. |
| GIF | PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF | Palette/transparency is inspected; animated input is first-frame only. |
| BMP/TIFF | Supported outputs | TIFF uses the first IFD and is flattened; there is no TIFF/BMP encoder. |
SVG, PDF, PSD, Figma, Sketch, and other design/document formats keep their own import and export workflows. HEIF/HEIC, JPEG XL, and QOI are not advertised as locally convertible without a bundled decoder.
Resize a placed image
For source-pixel work, select an image and open Object > Resize Image…. Width and height change the embedded raster; the placed node's bounds, crop, and page geometry do not. Keep the aspect-ratio link on for proportional output, or unlock it deliberately for a non-uniform raster resize.
Encoded sRGB is the compatibility default. Choose Linear lightwhen a photograph or transparent product edge needs physical-light averaging; Varve converts straight RGB before alpha premultiplication so antialiased edges do not acquire a dark fringe. This is a source-pixel operation, not placement scaling, canvas resizing, or a promise of recovered detail.
Metadata and color behavior
The conversion surface is a normalized RGBA8 canvas boundary. It applies EXIF orientation when the runtime supports the orientation-aware decoder, but it does not promise to copy ICC, EXIF, DPI, XMP, PNG ancillary chunks, animation timing, or source bit depth. Varve shows that loss as a warning before conversion.
For ICC-aware document color work, use the document color controls and the advanced Export workflow. Quick Convert is intended for practical local asset preparation, not archival transcoding.
When to use another path
- Need editable vectors? Import SVG or use the vector/document workflow.
- Need scene-scale PNG/SVG/PDF output? Use File > Export.
- Need to resize a placed image? Use the image resize controls so the node geometry and pixel dimensions stay explicit.
- Need animation preservation? Keep the original media and use a dedicated animation workflow; Quick Convert intentionally emits one frame.
