Frame Interpolation
Generate a new in-between raster image from two selected photographs with the optional local RIFE model. This is an image-generation utility, not a layer-compositing or blend-mode tool.
When to use it
Choose Frame Interpolation when two images are consecutive or closely related frames and you need a derived midpoint for a motion study, transition, or retiming experiment. It does not merge the source layers, preserve their separate masks, or add a blend mode between siblings.
Workflow
- Select one image-filled shape in the Photo workspace.
- Open Adjustments → Frame Interpolation and choose the second image.
- Download the optional model when prompted. The model is stored locally on this device.
- Select Interpolate to generate a preview, then choose Apply to create a new derived image layer.
Source and result behavior
The two source images remain unchanged and undoable. Applying the operation inserts a new PNG-backed image node; it does not replace either source, attach an Object Filter, or create a timeline keyframe. Canceling a generation leaves the document untouched.
Limitations
This workflow is experimental. RIFE output quality depends on the relationship between the two images, and the shipped channel convention has not been validated against a reference runtime. Large images can require substantial memory. Saved documents contain the derived result and do not require the model to display it later, but regenerating the result requires the model and an available local inference provider.
For photographic corrections use Image Treatments. For actual layer compositing use Object Filters, masks, and Adjustment Layers.
