What's built today
Varve is in active beta. Core systems are functional and tested, but you may hit rough edges. This is the current state of the development build.
What's built
- Canvas: Infinite canvas, viewport culling, sticky snap, rulers, guides, view rotation, zoom range 0.001x-64x
- Vector tools: Shapes, pen/pencil with bezier handles, boolean operations, node editing, layers, groups, frames
- Typography: Multi-line text, OpenType features, variable fonts, text-on-path, inline editing, CJK line breaking
- Color and effects: RGB/CMYK color management, ICC profiles, blend modes, shadows, blur, adjustment layers, halftone
- Motion: Timeline animation, keyframes, easing, Smart Animate, prototype interactions, CSS/Lottie/video export
- Export: SVG, React/Tailwind, Flutter, SwiftUI, PDF with CMYK, PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-4, per-node export settings
- Import: SVG, PDF, PSD, AI, EPS, and common image formats
- Design systems: Styles, variables, components, variants, libraries
- Background removal: AI-based with u2netp (bundled) and BiRefNet-Lite, hair edge refinement
- Workspace modes: Design, Print, Draw, Photo, Motion with per-mode toolbars and panels
Known limitations
- Complex script shaping (Arabic, Devanagari) not supported
- Collaboration features are UI scaffolding only
- Canvas bleed and trim visualization not implemented
- Background removal with BiRefNet-Lite requires native desktop (WASM has a 4GB memory limit)
